How much should bypass barn doors overlap?

1 Answer. You want the doors to overlap a bit. You also want the two doors to be the same width so when they are slid all the way to one side or the other that they are even. A one inch overlap is about ideal so for a 48″ finished opening each door would be 24.5 inches wide.

To have privacy the door usually overlaps the opening by an inch so that a 2-6 opening will require a 2-8 door. This means on one side of the door opening or the other there should be at least 2-8 and perhaps a little more to ensure all the hardware can fit properly.

Beside above, how are bypass barn doors measured? Using a tape measure, begin at the left edge of the opening and measure straight across to the right edge. (If the doorway has moldings, measure from outside edge to outside edge.) To determine the proper door width, add about 4 to 6 inches to your measurement.
